You graduated high school in June. It’s September now… does it feel weird to not have to be in class right now?
What do you mean? I’m going to skate PE tomorrow. I still go even though I graduated.

What are you doing with all this free time? Going to the beach? Do you get bored?
I sleep in, wake up around 1. Dude, I’m such a pile.

What else you like to do besides skating?
Hit up the beach and chill, do some bodyboarding, eat food, chill with the homies—that’s about it.

You’re a San Diego native, but you’ve been on a trip or two as well. From someone that’s lived in S.D. forever, how is the San Diego scene different from everywhere else?
I moved here from Japan when I was one, and have lived here my whole life. SD is G! The weather is awesome, what can I say.

Tell us about your family and your living scenario growing up.
My family likes to travel a lot… lots of random road trips to Wyoming; trips to Hawaii, and Europe. I can’t complain.

What’s your go-to spot when you’re not trying to get a trick or film or whatever… when you just want to go have fun?
That’d have to be either Earl Warren or Del mar ditch, or just go bomb hills downtown.

Who are you skating with when you’re home?
Norton, Marius, Surrey, Rodney and Sam Hubble, the homie from Utah. He was just out here—he rips.

If there were such a thing as a perfect day for Wes, what would it be like?
Wake up then head to the beach and get in the water, especially in the summer if the water’s warm. Then, get some food with the homies and go skate. Chill dude, have a good time.

How often you live that day?
Pretty much every day.

What’s your overall approach to this whole skating thing? Are you the type to try and try and try a trick for thirty days until you get it? Or are you more casual?
You can’t try a trick if you really want to do it; it’s unnecessary. I’d rather just mess around and bomb hills. Have fun, ya know?

Who would you list as your biggest influences in skating and why?
Penny, Cardiel, Guy, Vincent Alvarez—that guy’s one of my favorites—Rick Howard, Carroll, Wade Speyer… all the goods. And Ron Allen—dude’s been skating since I was a sperm, man.

You’ve been traveling with the DC crew a little bit… tell us about those experiences. What were some of your favorite places?
All of them: Hawaii was rad, Europe was G, kickin’ it with Jorn in Oslo, all the homies in London and Stuttgart. France was sick too—the homie Cedrick showed us around. Everywhere was tight, and Brazil was amazing.
Who’s been the funnest guy to travel with or been the best experience for you? Would you call any of those guys heroes or major influences on your skating?
I’ve had good times with all of them. Bjorn, Splinter (Sam Winter), Matt Miller, Craig (Greg Myers), Laurent Gehin, and all the Euro homies. Colin and Danny were some of my favorite guys when I was growing up. I used to skate the YMCA park all the time and see those guys ripping. I remember having a pair of Danny’s shoes sometime back in ’99. I saw Danny on the vert ramp and I remember him walking by and saying “nice shoes”. I was hyped. I was about 9 or 10 back then.

Any good stories from traveling with those boys?
In Brazil (for King of Sao Paulo in August) some homeboy got shot up 7 times in front of our hotel. I guess he tried to rob a cop or something. We were just chillin’ in the hotel and we heard shots go off and people screaming. Aside from that there were a ton of kids huffing glue all over the place. On a lighter note, all I gotta say is Alex Carolino. The guy is amazing—first try lines.

Who are some up and coming guys you’re hyped on?
Marquise Henry—he has all the positive aspects of a great skateboarder. He’s the nicest dude in the world and doesn’t drink, smoke, or curse. He just skates, and he’s always down. Matt Miller too—he’s super underrated. His part in “And Now” was great.

What’s the Wes master plan for the next year?
Just keep doing what I’m doing.
