Bio:
Originally from Boston, MA, PJ quickly gained attention because of his highly technical street skating. He first gained notice thanks to his part in the Coliseum shop video "Wonderful Horrible Life"... a video that's been talked about and that has reached almost mythical status on YouTube. But despite such an amazing video part to start off his career, PJ never claims it or leans on it for credibility. With such a unique style and original approach to skateboarding, we can all look forward to what PJ gives us as time rolls on.
What are you doing today?
Not much, but I’m about to roll over to Paul’s to meet up with Paul, Jeremy, and Eli.
Eli’s staying with you now, right?
Kinda. But he’s always got shit to do.
I know you’ve had weird Germans and people from all over the place stay there.
Yeah, I felt bad for the German dudes because they were here when my house got robbed.
Elaborate on that a bit for those who don’t know.
Well, I had left [my house] with Lem Villemin and his other German friend who was staying there to go skate. When we came back Lem’s homey was like, ‘where’s my computer?’ So then I started looking around and I didn’t see my computer! Then I looked in my closet where I keep all my watches and shit, and those were all gone too. They took a few other things too, but it was weird because they didn’t rumble through nothin’. It seemed like they just knew and just took what they needed.
Did you ever find out who did it?
We looked through the security footage, but nope.
Who’s your favorite person that’s stayed at your house so far?
Probably going to have to be Wenning.
I just heard he might be staying at your house for the next two years.
Huh?
For the next two years...
... oh shit! He wants to stay at my house for two years?
Well, every time I talk to him it’s something different. But he told me he’s shipping his car out here on Tuesday and staying for maybe two years.
Well, I heard he’s shipping his car out here, but if he’s staying for that long he should just get his own place. But he’s more than welcome.
I’ve definitely shared hotel rooms with Wenning and know that he’s a pretty good character. What makes Wenning great?
I don’t know! He’s just awesome.
I know when they broke in they stole your watches. What’s the most ridiculous purchase you’ve ever made?
Well, I spent 10 grand on a tv, but I watch tv so that’s cool.
How big is it?
60 inch or whatever. I got a bunch of other ridiculous purchases, but that was a big one.
Do you watch tv on it, or is it strictly skate videos?
Strictly skate video and movies. I have been watching a few Celtics games recently, but that’s about it.
Didn’t you throw out a pitch at a Red Sox game?
That was interesting. I’ve never been in front of that many people. The president of the Red Sox’s wife was down to build a skate park in Boston, so that’s kind of how it came about.
Did you throw a strike?
Yo, I threw a pitch. I threw a good one. I didn’t do nothin’ crazy. I didn’t want to be that asshole, you know?
Had you even thrown a baseball before that, or was that new to the Ladd?
I played a little baseball as a kid, but it had been a long, long time.
Speaking of being young, didn’t you once have a cat named Colin McKay?
It was my sister’s, but yeah, its name was Colin. It was pretty funny.
Does Danny Way know about that?
No. It was just a joke.
Hey, didn’t you go to Skatetopia once?
Yeah. That was pretty F**ked up. It was the first King of the Road or whatever. It’s weird how you get yourself in weird situations sometimes, right?
Yeah, you say yes to something and the next thing you know you’re at Skatetopia.
Yeah, definitely f**ked up. That place is pretty tweaked. I mean, there are pools and stuff there that are pretty good. Paul was there too… that was pretty funny because I can’t think of anyone more opposite of Skatetopia than Paul.
You’re in EA’s SKATE. Did you have to put on the spandex and do the whole range of motion thing?
What, you didn’t have to do that? How did you get out of that?
No, I didn’t. I was on a trip or something.
You got out of it and I had to go up there three times!
So you went up there three times and put on the spandex three times?
Yeah, yeah. I thought everybody had to do it.
Well, I guess you did every trick they needed so they didn’t need me.
It was cool though. I mean, you see Tiger Woods and all the basketball players do it so you don’t feel that weird.
They must have footage of that… where can I see it?
They got footage, but I told them not to use it!
How’s eating meat going? Do you feel like you can ollie higher now that the cows are inside of you?
Yeah. Try it. I don’t f**k around with McDonald’s cheeseburgers or nothin’.
So just filet mignon?
You’re an asshole.
No, I think it’s awesome. I remember we used to eat Cinnabons so I think it’s good if you treat yourself. What’s your favorite restaurant to eat at in LA?
Whole Foods is just down the street, and Chipotle is too. Pretty standard.
Danny is sponsored by Whole Foods. He should let you use that card.
Yeah, that $500 a month card. I’d put a Whole Foods sticker on my board… it’s a lot better than Red Bull.
Lets talk about the minivan.
That thing got the job done, that’s for damn sure. That was strictly a skate mobile. I think I was getting $800 bucks a month from Element, so I bought this minivan for skate mission purposes. We had the box, generator, lights—we got it done with that thing. I remember one time I was getting on the freeway when it was kind of wet out, and I just spun off the road. But nothin’ happened, so I just kept going. That thing got f**ked up... it ended up being a delivery van for my dad I think.
How many times did it go cross-country?
It went cross-country twice.
Who’s your favorite skateboarder ever?
I’m going to have to go with Koston. Everyone grows up with a favorite skater, right? Like, I want to skate like this person. I feel like even Danny had a favorite, like Hosoi or something.
What else... you ever going to go back east to do some skating? I think everyone would like to see some east coast PJ footage.
Yeah, as soon as it warms up. For sure that’s happening.
Are you going to come down to San Diego to come skate tomorrow? What time?
Yeah, at noon.
Thanks PJ. Call me when you get down here.
