On Saturday we were back for the second King of Los Angeles, another amazing amateur street skateboarding contest in another central hub of skateboarding culture. After stops at two iconic LA street spots, Nick Merlino was crowned the winner and walked $6000 richer!
King of Los Angeles 2008 started bright and early over at Lockwood, a legendary LA flatground spot seen in countless videos, especially in the early '90s. These days the playground is off limits to skateboarders, guarded by a tall chain link fence. But we unlocked Lockwood especially for KOLA, bringing in picnic tables, benches, boxes, ledges, and rails. With 50 of LA's top ams on hand, a pretty heated morning session went down with Ray Malonado taking the Lockwood win, earning a G for his efforts.
We then packed up and headed over to Belmont school and it's famous 9-stair, freshly de-nobbed and ready for action. Nick Merlino came in hot, taking the win and the $1000 that came with it. The finish gave Nick enough points to be the overall winner of the contest, earning him the King of Los Angeles crown and an extra $5000.
Thanks to everyone who came out to support and skate!
